We’ve lost another respected medical authority
Most Americans are familiar with the American Medical Association (AMA) and holds it in high esteem. I’ve written to them during the Trump administration to request their attention to Dr. Scott Atlas and his role as advisor to President Trump. He appeared to be the lead physician at that time on the Covid-19 task force. Most of us are aware that Dr. Atlas is a radiologist. He has no specialized training or experience in public health, infectious disease nor epidemiology. It appears, however, that he was the leading physician in determining the path of America’s response to the pandemic.
It appeared that the prior administration’s plan for responding to the pandemic, as determined by Dr. Atlas, was to attempt to establish “herd immunity”. This intervention of allowing the virus to spread unchecked throughout America was not in keeping with the vast majority of experienced public health, infectious disease and epidemiological experts. Their conclusion is widely held, not only in the U.S. but around the world. It had been estimated that should we attempt to achieve herd immunity in the manner that Dr. Atlas suggests, it would be at the expense of over a million to 2 million American lives, who would die in this effort. Today however, with deaths over 800,000 people, perhaps our dependency to rely solely upon vaccinations was not such a great idea after all.
Many of us have read the letter from Stanford University, where Dr. Atlas had been affiliated, but they took the responsibility to inform the public that his views were not in keeping with the views of well respected experts.
“To prevent harm to the public’s health, we also have both a moral and an ethical responsibility to call attention to the falsehoods and misrepresentations of science recently fostered by Dr. Scott Atlas, a former Stanford Medical School colleague and current senior fellow at the Hoover Institute at Stanford University. Many of his opinions and statements run counter to established science and, by doing so, undermine public-health authorities and the credible science that guides effective public health policy…….in contest, encouraging herd immunity through unchecked community transmission is not a safe public health strategy. Infact, this approach would do the opposite, causing significant increase in preventable cases, suffering and deaths, especially among vulnerable populations such as older individuals and essential workers.”
During this time of fear and chaos as we all struggle with the massive loss of life from the pandemic, we need our institutions and mainstream media to expose wrongdoings of any physician who had created a platform for themselves to present their personal views.
I decided to contact the AMA, during that time, to see if they would step up and sanction this physician and put an end to this direction that he was encouraging the country to pursue. I included the specific codes that I believe speak to this violation. Code of Medical Ethics Opinion 8.12 clearly defines that Dr. Atlas has violated the ethical code of the AMA.
“Physicians involved in the media environment should be aware of their ethical obligations to patients, the public, and the medical profession; and that their conduct can affect their medical colleagues, other health care professionals, as well as institutions with which they are affiliated. They should also recognize that members of the audience might not understand the unidirectional nature of the relationship and might think of themselves as patients. Physicians should:
Always remember that they are physicians first and foremost, and must uphold the values, norms, and integrity of the medical profession.
Encourage audience members to seek out qualified physicians to address the unique questions and concerns they have about their respective care when providing general medical advice.
Be aware of how their medical training, qualifications, experience, and advice are being used by media forums and how this information is being communicated to the viewing public.
Understand that as physicians, they will be taken as authorities when they engage with the media and therefore should ensure that the medical information they provide is:
Accurate
Inclusive of known risks and benefits
Commensurate with their medical expertise
Based on valid scientific evidence and insight gained from professional experience
Confine their medical advice to their area(s) of expertise, and should clearly distinguish the limits of their medical knowledge where appropriate.”
My question to you, the American Medical Association is, why didn’t you voice the truth publicly about Dr. Atlas’s violation of your ethical code 8.12? What authority did you have to sanction him and report him to his licensing board in California for his overt violation of ethical codes of conduct?
I had contacted the Medical Board of California first and their conclusion regarding Dr. Atlas was that “….it was determined that the Medical Board has no jurisdiction over this matter.” . So I ask you, who does? The purported mission of the AMA is “To promote the art and science of medicine and the betterment of public health”. It’s was beyond time to step up and voice your authority in this matter. The American people needed you to take action and prevent this untrained, inexperienced physician from making frightening decisions that would have contributed to countless loss of lives throughout the country.
Instead of evaluating the crisis, you remained silent. Today however, you chose to take a stand on ivermectin. You stated that despite the NIH’s neutral position on this safe, effective and evidence based FDA approved medication that has been used in treating over 4 Billion people around the globe, you essentially prohibited any licensed physician from prescribing this life saving early treatment medication. To determine that there was insufficient evidence of efficacy and safety is outrageous. One can easily see that there are over 70 international clinical trials with the vast majority showing outstanding success of ivermectin in treatment Covid-19. www.ivmmeta.com The only conclusion I can reach is that you have been captured by the pharmaceutical industry as well as our public health agencies and our mainstream media. You have lost all credibility. I urge all responsible physicians to discontinue their membership into this dishonest, unethical and discredited association.
The irony of what Scott Atlas was proposing however appears to have been a better path than vaccination. I sure didn’t see that coming. According to Google, Sweden has had 1.2 Million cases of Covid with only 15,286 deaths. Back in July, they recorded a 7 day average of cases at 213. On December 28th however their 7 day average was 4,428, so Omicon hit them as well. Yes, they’re a much smaller country than the U.S. but the rates of death cannot be dismissed. On July 11th, Sweden had vaccinated 35.6% of its population and has subsequently moved aggressively to get its citizens vaccinated. Without the benefit of vaccines however, they were able to keep their rates of infection and death low. It appears that every country has been under substantial pressure to accept and encourage vaccination despite their apparent success in preventing substantial death among its citizens without vaccination. Another excellent example was Uttar Pradesh who had a vaccinate rate of less than 4% when they did a massive campaign to test and treat and provide “home medicine kits” to all of its citizens. Within 8 weeks, they were able to drive down the numbers from 400,000 daily infections to less than 50,000. In another month, they brought that down to less than 1500 and today have effectively eliminated Covid. They too have been “encouraged” by the WHO to proceed with vaccinations despite their remarkable success. Guess what was in the home medicine kits? 12 mg. of ivermectin. Shouldn’t the WHO have made that protocol available to every country around the globe? Instead, they did everything in their power to prevent the world from knowing what was in those medicine kits. Fortunately the mainstream media, at the time, told the truth and confirmed the inclusion of ivermectin.
So this is where we are my friends. Public health authorities around the globe are under the control of the pharmaceutical industry. Their power is swift and complete. Fortunately there remains thousands of honorable, respected physicians and interested parties around the world who are starting to speak up. Stay tuned for more to come.
Thank you for your carefully presented post: well argued with attention to nuance.
Let me mention that Japan, which has a population size relatively closer to the USA compared with Sweden, also has far better health outcomes than the USA regarding Covid. Japan does allow for doctors to treat Covid patients with ivermectin. And Japan does NOT require vaccine mandates. https://www.mhlw.go.jp/stf/covid-19/vaccine.html They serve as an outlier to the Fauci Alliance, so to speak.
That said, I am sadly in full agreement with your general claims.
"Public health authorities around the globe are under the control of the pharmaceutical industry." So where do we go from here?
